Seniors (all classes): Final Exams/Final Projects

May 19, 2008

The last assignment of the year for you is to create an online resume. Include the following sections:

  • Skills
  • Education
  • Employment
  • Awards and Honors
  • Extracurricular Activities
  • Performances/Shows
  • Work Samples
  • Scanned and uploaded Letters of Recommendations if you have them.

You can create this as a blog with a post for each category. You are not required to publish it to the world, but you are required to save the posts, so I can check them. For seniors who need to take a final exam with me, this will serve as your final. For all others, it will be a regular assignment.

The purpose is to gather this information so you can keep it updated after you leave the Arts Academy. Please do that! It will make your lives easier when job opportunities come up with short notice if you have this information gathered in one place.

Assigned May 16, 2008. Due May 23 2008.

Assignment 16 (MMII): Audio Editing

February 27, 2008

Using an audio file, edit a person’s words to change what they are saying. You can move one section of what they are saying earlier or later in the audio track, or you can delete a word or words. I am looking for a smooth edit, so that when I listen to the file, I don’t hear an awkward cut.

Due Feb 29.

Assignment 15 (MMII): SAE Poster

January 23, 2008
The detailed instructions for this are taped on the closet door in my room. Poster must be 18×24 inches, must be related to this year’s theme: Climate for Change, and must tie in with an automotive theme in some way. Students are not required to submit a poster to the contest, and have their option of creating a poster that fits the intent of the contest, or of creating one that is critical in a way the contest people might object to. I won’t be submitting the critical ones to the actual contest, because the printing cost means I need to submit only ones I think might have a chance of winning. However, if you take it in that direction for the assignment, it won’t hurt your grade.

I’m looking for your ability to convey your thoughts visually, your technical skill, your creativity, and your use of typography.
Due: Feb 1.

Assignment 14 (MM II): Altered Perceptions

January 9, 2008

This is an exercise in creative thinking. Your design challenge is to take one object, and make it look like another object. You can do this either by setting up a photo shoot so that the photo itself is the finished object, or as a digital manipulation. Think about the shapes of objects, and try to divorce yourself from what the original function of the object is.

Assignment 11, 12, and 13 (MMII): Photo Scavenger Hunt

January 9, 2008

26 Things. Take one photo for each item on the list. You should have 26 photos at the end of this – I don’t want one photo turned in for several categories. Only photos that are in focus will be accepted. For each photo, you will get one point for turning in the picture, one for the creativity of the photo, and one for the composition. This means it’s possible to take all 26 photos and fail the assignment – the point is not to find the item; the point is to interpret or document it in an artistic way.

Feb 1: Next 8 photos due.

Feb 8: Next 10 photos due.

Submission Guidelines: Turn in all the photos for the week in one blog post containing all 8 (or 10 ) photos for that week. So one blog post should contain your first 8 photos, the next blog post should contain 8 more photos, and the final blog post should have the last 10 photos.

Assignment 10 (MMII): Broadcast Graphics

December 6, 2007

Design a graphic for a news program. Think about how the news program wants to convey itself. Is it cutting edge? Technologically advanced? Patriotic? What colors would a news program use?

Assignment 9 (MMII): Media Influence

December 5, 2007

Discuss techniques that the media uses (or can use) to sway public opinion in some way. How do graphics and music affect our reaction to a news story? What language can the media use to push a particular bias?

Due: Nov 29.

Assignment 8 (MMII): Stereotypes

December 5, 2007

Using the digital medium of your choice, create a work that confronts or addresses stereotypes in some way. The stereotypes can be related to race, gender, class, age, etc.

Submission: These will be saved to the 6th hour folder on the network, rather than posted on the blogs.

Due: Nov 20. (posted late, sorry)

Assignment 7 (Multimedia II): Video Interviews

October 18, 2007

Interview at least 3 people, 2 of whom must be youth (21 or younger) about what makes them view some people as “one of them” and some people as “the other.” By the end of this week, the interviews should be complete. (Next week we will work on video editing.) You should be looking for short sound bites that can be edited from the longer interviews, so that the final project has fairly quick pacing. This is a different feel than the video projects we did last year, which had longer more in depth interviews.

Videos can be done during school hours, or at home. If you opt to do the videos at home, be aware that you will be expected to work on a multimedia/graphics project of your choice during class time.

Due Oct 19.

Assignment 6 (Multimedia II): Race and Media

October 16, 2007

Critique an aspect of media that deals with race issues, and post to your blogs. For example, you could discuss how a particular race is depicted in sitcoms, in commercials, in the news, in print media, etc. Are there stereotypes that are promoted? Do you feel there are stereotypes that are deliberately avoided? Is the media changing the way it portrays certain groups of people, in your opinion?

There is not a right or a wrong answer or viewpoint. Essays will be graded on your ability to present and defend your views (whatever they are), citation of examples to prove your point (at least two examples), organization of your thoughts, and grammar and spelling.

Due Oct 18.
