Seniors (all classes): Final Exams/Final Projects

May 19, 2008

The last assignment of the year for you is to create an online resume. Include the following sections:

  • Skills
  • Education
  • Employment
  • Awards and Honors
  • Extracurricular Activities
  • Performances/Shows
  • Work Samples
  • Scanned and uploaded Letters of Recommendations if you have them.

You can create this as a blog with a post for each category. You are not required to publish it to the world, but you are required to save the posts, so I can check them. For seniors who need to take a final exam with me, this will serve as your final. For all others, it will be a regular assignment.

The purpose is to gather this information so you can keep it updated after you leave the Arts Academy. Please do that! It will make your lives easier when job opportunities come up with short notice if you have this information gathered in one place.

Assigned May 16, 2008. Due May 23 2008.

Assignment 34 (Dig Img I): 1 object, 2 moods

May 13, 2008

Select an inanimate (not alive) object. Take 2 different photos of it, creating two different moods with your photos. The challenge is to use camera angles, lighting, cropping, and environment to create two very different moods or emotions. Post your 2 images on your blog, with a caption for each one that identifies the emotion or mood.

No people/people parts/animals allowed in the photos for this assignment. This is to force you to make all the emotion come from the camera work, not from gesture, expression or body posture.

Assigned May 7, Due May 15.

Assignment 33 (Dig Img I): Creative thinking blog post

May 13, 2008

Write a blog post, brainstorming three creative ways that you could photograph an object to create emotion. What techniques could you use to add mood to a photograph? What could you do to make an object have impact in a photo?

Assigned: May 13, Due May 13.

Assignment 32 (Dig Img I): Halftones

May 5, 2008

After completing the halftone tutorial that we did in class, create your own image using halftones in a creative.  You can use the halftones in a symbolic way, you can use them as the basis for another stencil, you can use them to create a retro mood. Surprise and amaze me!

Assigned 5/1/08, due 5/7/08

Assignment 31 (Dig Img I): Stencils

April 24, 2008

1. Using one of your own photos (a new one for this project), design a stencil.  In photoshop, you will be converting the image to black and white, and reducing the levels to pure black and white – no shades of gray. The image must have either all the white or all the black interconnected. You can use a white or  black brush on a separate layer as needed.

2. Using an exacto knife which I will provide, cut out the stencil.

3. Select one of the fabric squares from the room. If you have all the white connected in your image, and the black pieces were thrown out, select a light fabric and spray paint black. If you have all the black connected and the white pieces were thrown out, select a dark fabric and spray paint white.

4. When the stencils are done, we will store them in the dark room to air out the smell overnight. (Don’t bring them into my classroom please because of the fumes.)

Assigned: April 15, due April 25.

Assignment 30 (Dig Img I): Powerpoint Slides

April 1, 2008

Create a PowerPoint presentation containing 6 slides (1 cover slide, 5 additional slides). The subject will be whatever you are currently studying in your history or social studies class. If you don’t have a history class this year, see me to work out an alternate topic.

What I’m looking for:

1. A color palette that is pleasing, but not distracting. If your background is louder than your text, you have a problem.

2. Readable fonts. Font choice and contrast are both important.

3. Use line spacing and bullets to separate your text into chunks. You should not be hitting the enter key extra times to space your lines.Use the line spacing option in the master slide.

Bad example of line spacing:

Lorem ipsum ut nobis oportere mel, duo nostro malorum reformidans cu. Eu eam magna pertinacia, dicat ubique audiam te vel. Id probo libris delenit cum, accusam percipit est id, et mea invidunt legendos. Sonet suscipit deserunt ex cum, reformidans neglegentur has eu, cu eos timeam perfecto iudicabit. An elitr ceteros apeirian nam. arum volumus oportere id usu, perfecto singulis te vel. Ne nec detraxit scribentur. Has cu brute clita ubique. Persius legimus eu eos. litr oporteat dissentiet ei ius, sea dicta movet delenit eu. Pro tritani ullamcorper ex. Vix in audiam recteque euripidis, has cu quaeque patrioque. Per accusam tractatos ocurreret cu. Vel ut mutat soleat placerat, eu quo doctus vocibus.

Better example of line spacing:

Lorem ipsum ut nobis oportere mel, duo nostro malorum reformidans cu. Eu eam magna pertinacia, dicat ubique audiam te vel. Id probo libris delenit cum, accusam percipit est id, et mea invidunt legendos. Sonet suscipit deserunt ex cum, reformidans neglegentur has eu, cu eos timeam perfecto iudicabit. An elitr ceteros apeirian nam.

Harum volumus oportere id usu, perfecto singulis te vel. Ne nec detraxit scribentur. Has cu brute clita ubique. Persius legimus eu eos.

Elitr oporteat dissentiet ei ius, sea dicta movet delenit eu. Pro tritani ullamcorper ex. Ea mea summo delectus, eam ea percipitur disputando reformidans, ei mea dolore consequat. Te inani ancillae nam, ut ius voluptua dignissim. Vix in audiam recteque euripidis, has cu quaeque patrioque. Per accusam tractatos ocurreret cu. Vel ut mutat soleat placerat, eu quo doctus vocibus.

4. Make the presentation about the content, not about the powerpoint slides. If I walk away from it and what I remember is that you had slides that spun and shattered during transitions, that’s not a successful briefing. A successful briefing is when I’ve learned something new about your subject.

5. Q: Should I use Comic Sans? A. Only if you have a burning desire to revise your work before you receive credit for it.

6. Q: Should I use clip art? A. No. Professional level designers stopped doing that in the 80’s. You should, too.

7. You may use historical photos from the internet for this project. You must cite your source. (Insert the URL as a caption under your slide, or include a reference slide at the end, after your required 6 slides.) You will need to include at least 1 image on your cover slide, plus 3 additional images in your slides.

8. Make your content interesting. If it bores you, it will bore me. (Garbage in –> Garbage out.)

Assigned:  March 25, Due Apr 4. These will be saved into the 3rd or 5th hour folder on the network, not posted to the blogs. (Make sure to save the file – with your name in the filename – to My Documents. Then go to Start –> My Computer, and copy/paste it to the proper folder.)
