Seniors (all classes): Final Exams/Final Projects

May 19, 2008

The last assignment of the year for you is to create an online resume. Include the following sections:

  • Skills
  • Education
  • Employment
  • Awards and Honors
  • Extracurricular Activities
  • Performances/Shows
  • Work Samples
  • Scanned and uploaded Letters of Recommendations if you have them.

You can create this as a blog with a post for each category. You are not required to publish it to the world, but you are required to save the posts, so I can check them. For seniors who need to take a final exam with me, this will serve as your final. For all others, it will be a regular assignment.

The purpose is to gather this information so you can keep it updated after you leave the Arts Academy. Please do that! It will make your lives easier when job opportunities come up with short notice if you have this information gathered in one place.

Assigned May 16, 2008. Due May 23 2008.

Assignment 30 (Dig Img II): Two color stencils

May 9, 2008

In Digital Imaging I, we created stencils with a background color, and one color paint. This year, we are creating stencils with a background color, plus 2 colors of paint. You may want to look at the work of Logan Hicks (see image below) for inspiration, at http://www.workhorsevisuals.com/flash/index.html.

Process:

Begin with one of your own photographs. Copy the background layer, use the channel mixer to convert it to monochrome (gray scale).  Adjust the levels so that the layer is pure black and white (no gray tones).

Turn that layer invisible. Make a new copy of the original background layer. Repeat the same process, but this time adjust the levels differently, so that it either has more black or more white than the previous layer.

Reorder your layers in the layer palette if necessary so that the original background layer is on the bottom. The layer with the most amount of black is in the middle, and the layer with the least amount of black is on top.

On the middle layer, readjust the levels so that the black is adjusted to a medium gray. You should see one solid shade of gray, and one solid shade of white on this layer now (no other shades).

On the top layer, set the blending mode to “darken.” This should give you white and gray from the middle layer, and the black shadows will be visible on top of that from the top layer.

Adjust each layer in photoshop to smooth edges where needed, and ensure that either the white or the solid color will be a continuous single piece of paper after cutting.

I will want to check your work before printing. After getting the design approved, make only the middle layer visible, print that. Then make only the top layer visible, and lighten it to save my ink, and print that.

You are ready to cut the design out, and then spray paint.

Assigned April 28, Due May 13.

Assignment 27, 28, 29 (Dig Img II): Three additional 2 page spreads

May 9, 2008

In the last card marking period, we completed one 2-page spread of a book design. Three additional 2-page spreads are required. I am looking for original graphic design, if you are using photographs they must be your own photos. The layout should be consistent (though not necessarily identical) to the previously submitted set of pages. Remember to use consistent fonts, a color scheme that ties the entire book together, and a layout on each set of pages that looks like a coherent body of work, not pages from 4 completely separate projects.

Assigned April 4, due May 5.

Assignment 26 (Dig Img II): Book pages

April 1, 2008

Last semester we designed book covers. This semester, we will be designing portfolio books. The examples passed around the room showed one example of a portfolio book using photography. The other example was a book with text, which had vector-style graphics running throughout it.

Your assignment is create a two page spread for your portfolio book. You can use a photography theme, or a graphics theme with design elements you create in PhotoShop, or a mix of the two.

Assigned March 25, Due April 4.

Assignment 25 (Dig Img II): Photomontage

April 1, 2008

For details, refer to the slides and examples that were shown in class.

Assigned: March 25, Due April 4. Submit these to your blogs.

Assignment 17: last set of Scavenger Hunt photos

Assignment 23: SAE poster

Assignment 24: Image Morph

Assignment 24 (Dig Img II): Image morphing

February 27, 2008

Using two images that  you create, morph one image to the other.

Your work will be evaluated on the work that went into creating the start and end image, the creativity of the concept itself, and the technical skill in morphing the two images smoothly – linking elements from one to the other so they don’t just fade in and out over each other, but one part actually morphs to the other.

Due Feb 29.

Assignment 17 Reprise (Dig Img II): 4th Group Scavenger Hunt

January 28, 2008

I’ve changed the due date on the last set of 8 images for the scavenger hunt to Feb 14. This is a FIRM date. Because it’s an extension of a previously assigned project, there will be no further extensions, even if you are sick during this time. This should have already been submitted, the extension moves it into the third marking period.

To get credit for this assignment, you must give your post a title of “4th Group Scavenger Hunt.”(There is no extension on the other images in the scavenger hunt).

Assignment 23 (Dig Img I): SAE Poster

January 23, 2008

The detailed instructions for this are taped on the closet door in my room. Poster must be 18×24 inches, must be related to this year’s theme: Climate for Change, and must tie in with an automotive theme in some way. Students are not required to submit a poster to the contest, and have their option of creating a poster that fits the intent of the contest, or of creating one that is critical in a way the contest people might object to. I won’t be submitting the critical ones to the actual contest, because the printing cost means I need to submit only ones I think might have a chance of winning. However, if you take it in that direction for the assignment, it won’t hurt your grade.

I’m looking for your ability to convey your thoughts visually, your technical skill, your creativity, and your use of typography.
Due: Feb 1.

Assignment 22 (Dig Img II): Altered Perceptions

January 9, 2008

This is an exercise in creative thinking. Your design challenge is to take one object, and make it look like another object. You can do this either by setting up a photo shoot so that the photo itself is the finished object, or as a digital manipulation. Think about the shapes of objects, and try to divorce yourself from what the original function of the object is.
